They say the Devil loves a compromise; the boat I'm currently working
on has 2 chines, which should make the initial stability a little
better by adding roll resistance, decreasing the beam to 19"( my
current boat is 20)and lowering the sheer height amidship, for an
improved paddling position (I sometimes hit my knuckles, which smarts
considerably because I left the deck paint rough, reasoning that it
would be easier to climb onto from a paddle float), and decreasing the
length to 16 ft., figuring that I am probably not a strong enough
paddler to take advantage of the boat's long waterline.

What I'll probably end up with is a slow (2 chines, shorter
waterline), tippy (narrow beam) boat with poor direcional stability
(short keel) and poor secondary stability (low sheer). I've
occasionally built very bad boats by following my own ideas too far.
It may be that I'm incapable of learning from experience.

I'll let you know how it turns out and whether it affects carving,
which, according to conventional wisdom, it should.

Regards.
