You don't need to because the exterior polyurethane acts as a barrier. I
have coated the AU only without an undercoat. Not so good. It doesn't seal
the fabric like the polyurethane and the boat tends to leak. Even without
the polyurethane undercoat the polyester fabric does not absorb enough to
glue itself to the frame.
