Craig,

I've got Vogel's book but Jeffrey Mount's _California Rivers and Streams:
The Conflict Between Fluvial Processes and Land Use_ has more relevant
explanations for yakers. In the first half of the book Mount describes how
river hydrology works (fluid theory, waves, sediment transport, etc.) and
explains why most "flood control" structures eventually fail. The second
half of the book is an interesting historical and scientific analysis of
how and why California's rivers have changed over time.
