I've used western red cedar for all three. The gunwales were ok, but
the stringers and keelson tend to get more impact stress such as in
surf landings and crack or splinter with use. Red cedar is nice to
work with and clear lumber is readily available, but if you can't find
any other type of wood, you might consider going up to 1/2 inch on the
hull stringers from 3/8 inch, up to 2 inches depth on the gunwales and
to a one-piece keelson. Mostly I've seen damage where the keelson
sections are joined together.
