Mark-
I have been using Dura-Tuff over nylon to finish my first baidarka and have
been satisfied after the first three coats. Then I ran out! I ordered
some from:
Titan Corporation
5629 208th Street SW
Lynnwood, WA 98036
(800) 553-7699
I asked for one gallon to be delivered in 8 1-pint containers (which they
will do for a nominal fee, of course--you could also get it in quarts)
because once you open it the stuff sometimes wants to solidify into one big
huge dura-tuffsicle. This, incidentally, happened with about a quart of my
original batch, when I took it to a paint shop and had them add pigment to
it--twice.
I asked the Titan folks about that and here's what they said. Dura-Tuff
utilizes ambient humidity in the air to cure. In fact, the container
recommends using it only when humidity is at a certain point. At any rate,
adding pigment causes it to cure MUCH more quickly. I my case, when I
added a double dose of pigment to get just the right color--which turned
out to be kind of nasty anyway :) -- it froze in the can in about 7 hours.
The Titan people said they have had good results adding pigment, but you
have to mix and use right away. And the more pigment you use, the faster
it wants to cure. They recommend a "generic coloring additive" which they
sell in a tube like artist's paint. I got white and will be testing it in
about a week, so I can let you know what happens.
I also asked some safety questions about Dura-Tuff and they said they would
include a list of the solvents in it and recommended safety precautions.
Over the phone they basically said if you apply it outdoors where you have
100% ventillation you're OK. If you do it indoors at all you need a
separate oxygen supply. I'll let you know what they include in their
shipment.
Good luck.
