Hey James!
Is the boat he used very tipsy?, I have been lucky with my
introduction trips for friends, but the boats we have used are rather
stabile. However, most of the paddling novices have capsized during
their first trips by unstable kayaks, so to have good experience with
the sport one should be introduced by a very stable boat in addition
to be prepared physically. Remember the heap-joints should allow the
boat to move while sitting vertical. The braces should also be
remembered, the additional support needed should be provided by
reaction between the paddle and the sea.

Hey Wolf! Is there something wrong with the bulletin board, or did
everyone
go paddle at the same time? Took a friend out today, his first trip,
also
his first capsize... but he did OK. Came up laughing, said "well,
you told
me not to do that..." Finished the artwork on Chinook today, am
planning to
coat the bottom tomorrow. That is kinda scary, but here goes!

What you want is for the gunwales to form a smooth
curve. If you figure what fraction of the center
spreader 1.5 inches is, increase the others by the
same fraction. That ought to be close enough.

If the gunwale curve doesn't look smooth, move the
other spreaders forward or backward a tad til they do.
