Subject: baidarka Scarf question
Hello List,
I've been reading the most recent posts on scarf joints when I realized
that I don't have a firm grip on how to do this. My first queston is
regarding orientation. For example, say we are scarfing together two
pieces of 1 X 3 (actual). We could cut the pieces so that:
A) The tapered end is 3 inches wide and tapers down from 1 inch to some
lesser thickness.
OR
B) The tapered end is 1 inch wide and tapers down from 3 inches to some
lesser thickness.
I'm attemping to describe the two possible orientations. Which one would
be the preferred one to use?
Someone mentioned pinning (dowelling) the joint. I can see doing that with
orientation "B" but certainly not with "A". Right?
Perhaps this is all detailled on a web site. Please point me there and
I'll stop asking questions that may already have been addressed.
Thanks for any info,
Bill Leonhardt
