Well, how's this. If anyone in the Puget Sound region wants help with wood,
drop me a note at mariner@seanet.com. We can arrange to get some good stock
at Edensaw or Flounder Bay. We can mill it to your size specs here, and
even mortise it for your ribs. I am working on a shaping jig that will
allow us to mill tapered gunwales, and if you would like to help with that
project, you can have your own really authentic gunwales (they were slightly
wider at the top than the bottom of the cross-section).

If you are outside Puget Sound (as in, Florida?), and really REALLY stuck
for kayak wood, we could work something out regarding shipping. get me
offline on the mariner email, or call me at 425-423-0811.

Geez Guys & Gals all this finger jointing and scarping is taking a lot
of time. If time = $ at any rate its got to be cheaper to get clear wood
unless it's one or two joints even if you have to order it. You can buy
aircraft grade Sitka Spruce 1"x 2" any length for $3.50 per lin. Ft.
from Aircraft Spruce 800-831-2949. This seems to be overkill. I went to
a lumber supplier not a Home Depot type store and got clear milled CVG
fir in 16' lengths for around $10 each for my gunwales and keel. You
just need to go where builders go to buy wood. Look in the Yellow pages
for someone that advertises hardwoods. Another alternative source would
be to find a millwork shop. Again check the Yellow Pages for millwork or
Arch. millwork. A few years ago in Portland I had one of these mill some
1 3/4 x 4" CVG fir to splice into and patch a floor on a house I was
restoring. They did all the precise milling and it was some of the
finest truly vertical grain quartersawn fir I've seen in pretty long
lengths. They charged me approx. $130 for 105 lin. ft. The moral to this
story is that you just need to look in places other than the weekend
handyman store.
