Ash has good steam bending properties as well. If you aren't getting
anywhere with others, I know you can get excellent oak and ash from
Pettey's (or Pettis' - don't know spelling for sure) saw mill up in
Wilton, NY- ~exit 16 off the Northway (I-87). That's about 175 miles
for you, but worth the trip right now as it is about peak foliage. Tell
'em Gardner Congdon (the younger) sent you. Very good guy- 3rd
generation saw mill. You can get his phone # from information in the 518
area code. If he doesn't have any on hand I'm sure he can cut some for
you which would be great since then you'd be working with green lumber
which will bend much better. I used 1X8 (which measures out at 3/4"
thick) quarter sawn and then cut strips 1/4" by about 3' long.
