James, I have The Aleutian Kayak by Wolfgang Brinck and gave carving out the
paddle idea a thought because I have almost no woodworking skills. Then I
realized I had no way of getting a full length baidarka out of my basement.
Looking at folding kayaks, everything is usually flat for folding so there
is no need to carve anything, so I ditched the idea. Your right, the wooden
parts are beautiful, but for now I need to concentrate on a very simple
design to match my skills. That means either aluminum or a simple wood
project. Looking at the cuts and slices on my hands from machines at work
with sharp edged metal frames I would appreciate the soft touch of wood.
Once I accomplish something I think I can tackle I may give your thought a
try.
