Subject: RE: baidarka cockpit coaming size and rescue techniques
I've read this string with particular interest. On a recent Boundary Waters
trip, my nephew took a spill as he tried to paddle up a rapid. His greenland
style boat, with no floatation, had plenty of bouancy. When I caught up to
him, we decided to try a re-entry, even though shore was close by. We easily
emptied most of the water from the boat with-I believe it's called the
cross-over. He was a bit too flushed with adrenaline to follow my nebulous
directions for the leg-over-the-paddle re-entry, so after several trys, he
clamored up over the back of his and my boat and slid in, as I steadied his
boat. It wasn't pretty, but for a first time for both of us, it worked. I
plan on buying a whitewater boat to practice pool rolling this winter. I
would rather learn to roll than nuts around with the rescue thing, although
I will learn and practice that as well. I will-and do-also use floats!
