I took a closer look at how much pigment I used. Its definitely no more
than 1/3 tube, and its holding nicely. Thats about 3/4 oz pigment to 8oz
poly. That would work out to only 2-2/3 tubes for 2 quarts, or less than
$15. With a darker color it might be even less, and I might even have used
more than I needed to. I seem to recall people saying they only used a
couple quarts of poly, although my memory could be faulty.
But, this appears to present the same problem as before, and that probably
wouldnt change with powder (would it?) although it would cost less-filling
the weave. I'm rapid warm-air drying these coats and I've got 3 (heavy)
coats so far, and the weave is still quite evident. I didnt take pains to
really work the first coat deeply into the weave, however, and that might
be part of the problem. Its kind of a cool fish-skin effect though, rather
than the lumpy clumpy fuzzy effect on canvas. But its still not smooth. I
dunno, I might go with Corey goop after all. Theres no hurry, I'm sure
it'll be at least 2 weeks before skinning is done. I'll play around some
more and decide if I want fishscale or smooth, or if I can make this smooth
by working it in. I'm not going to spend more money on filler, I know that.
If I do that, I might as well just buy the Corey goop. Another thing about
his goop is, I cant imagine the skin ever loosening once that stuff sets.
