Dear Wayne,
Like Peter, I 'eyeball' the amount of dry pigment in the polyurethane as
well. I find that I will use about four ounces to the quart-- but much of
this settles and becomes gummy at the bottom. I also find it doesn't mix to
easily, and can become lumpy with 'powdery-pockets' floating around.
The result I get from this is occasional areas of darker splotches,
especially at lap-marks, on the first coat. The second coat is usually more
consistant, unless I add more pigment (which I usually do). The third coat
is also 'sketchy', as I'm usually at the bottom of the quart, where the
pigment has settled. This results in more splotchiness all-round, which I
can vary according to the aggressiveness of my brush-dripping.
Well, this does sound like an awful mess, doesn't it? Alas, all of my
kayaks have a mottled splotchy inconsistant look of what are already widely
un-appealing colors. They look just like the skins on "real" kayaks!!!
Harvey
P.S. Peter is very right to be wary of mixing pigments: I have studied
color-theory and was confident about what I was doing in mixing
dry-pigments. . . I was most horrified at the results-- they were NOT what
they 'should've been.' I 'fixed' the problem by going heavy (dark) with a
particular pigment. It seems the first coat on a raw-cloth is going to
absorb the most pigment and thus be most important in setting the
'back-ground' tone. I learned from my mistake, and as always, went and did
it again despite my 'learning.' I'd like to say I won't do it again,
but.........
