Dear Baidarkanauts-

Got a cryptic message on my answering machine yesterday from someone at the
Alaska State Museum Bookstore. It was in response to my semi-annual query
about when David W. Zimmerly's book "Qajaq: Kakas of Siberia and Alaska"
will be re-printed. They have been planning on a new (3rd) edition for
many years now.

Approximately 100 people from this listserv have submitted their names and
contact information to me, which I have forwarded to Museum Specialist
Steve Henrickson over the past 2 years. He was a little surprised to see
such interest in the book!

At any rate, the answering machine message stated:
1. The book should be off the presses in mid to late May.
2. The museum store will sell the book.
3. They will be sending out order forms soon.

The person who left the message did not identify herself and did not verify
that they would be sending order forms to people on "the list" I submitted.
She also did not specify a price. I will check on this information and
post it here as soon as I have an answer.

In the meantime, I believe it is safe to assume that everyone on "the list"
will be notified by mail when the book is for sale, which may or may not be
in the next month. If you have any questions in the meantime, want to get
on "the list" or need anything else, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Since I'm just a lowly librarian and former editor, but not actually
involved in the publishing world, the AK museum or anything else "official"
related to this work I can only try to mediate the whole thing.

Good news though, eh?

P.S. For those of you who do not know what I am talking about, Zimmerly's
book is an unparalleled source of information for native kayak builders.
Aside from its insightful text and intriguing photos, there are scads of
line drawings and construction details for various kayaks of AK and
Siberia. In essence "baidarka blueprints."

There are very few copies of the 1986 edition around, but a few are held by
libraries. If you want to see this book in its last edition go to your
local library and see if you can place and Inter-library loan request for
it. That's what most of us have been doing for years.
