Thats a fine idea, I'll keep it in mind for future boats. For now I think I
got my problem solved. I called a local reproduction company and got a
really good quote for blowing the elevation view up to life size. So I
drove 60 miles roundtrip today to have it done, and they gouged me for 3
times what they quoted ( I didnt want to draw them lifesize but at that
price I'll be considering it for next time). I'll deal with that when the
manager returns on Monday, but for now I've got a lifesize lateral view of
the boat on my garage floor.
In addition to the main scarf near the center, I cut a dart as described
earlier several feet in back of the cockpit, and another, slightly narrower
one just foreward of the main scarf. I clamped them all together, laid it
on top of the drawings, and voila! The line gunnels are covered by my
wooden ones. Now I just have to fasten the scarfs and darts and shape the
3.5 inch boards down to size, which in this case will range from 2.5 inches
amidships to around 2 inches or so at the ends. I really wanted to get the
sheer right without numerous scarfs and cuts, and unless I goof something
when I shape them, it looks like I will have succeeded. Now I can get down
to some serious boat building. Once I get these gunnels (and end plates)
done I'm in fairly familiar territory again.
