Splitting timber is the best way to get grain which follows the piece.
I have been splitting white cedar for ribs. then putting them through a
portable plainer to size them. It works very well.
I would do the same for gunwales, keelson and chines if I had suitable
timber available.
White cedar should be suitable for most or all kayak parts. I would at least
try it.
I have also successfully split ash for combings.

Subject: baidarka Log Splitting
Most Anyone,
Does anyone have experience in splitting timber for kayak parts? I have a
mother-in-law who has a tree farm (not christmas). I can not cut any trees
down, but if the wind does the job, then it is fair game. I contracted a
portable saw mill last fall, and have about 2000 bf of maple and white cedar
drying in the barn. Oh, yeah, a kayak made of maple... What was I
thinking!!? If you have some sitka spruce or western red cedar growing in
your back yard,I highly recomend the "Woodmizer" portable saw mill. The
price per board foot was very reasonable. Just remember to advise your
significant other about your plans... you know, a note on the fridgerator or
mumbling something about selective timber management before she falls asleep
at night.
Why do I want blister my hands and injure my back while splitting gunwales
from a tree? My family is expecting a third child this November and my wife
refuses to work for three months. There should be a law about that. So, I
am forced to more extreme creative measures: splitting timber...come what
may fall. So, everybody keep thinking about the Columbus Day storm for this
Fall, or I may have to take a trip with James Mitchell for some spruce in
Cory Freedman's back yard.
