Dear Peter,
Eugene Arima's "Inuit Kayaks In Canada" and his "Notes on the Kayak and
its Equipment at Ivuyivik, P.Q." as well as Freeman's paper "Observations
on the Kayak-Complex, Belcher Islands, N.W.T." are hard to get. . . I don't
believe either are currently 'available.' Try college libraries,
inter-library loan, etc. something'll turn up.
As far as being trapped inside a kayak when it rolls-- and fails at rolling:
I have been just such a victim. (Storytime:) My brother built a stunning
three-hole Kodiak Baidarka semi-replica, and he and a friend were going to
try to roll it. Not wanting to be left out of the fun, I volunteered to
fill the third hole. Alas, they only had two sprayskirts, but for better or
worse, they did have a hole cover. So I went below decks, back against the
keel, and the cover was fastened over the hole. The kayak was
semi-translucent so I could see light, and even the waterline. I was warned
before the roll, and I held on tight to the deck-beam above, pressing my
back to the keel, so as to not shift. This was quite a bit of fun, and
inverted I could see wiggling feet, and feel the several attempts at
uprighting the 31" wide kayak. After a few tries, their skirts came off,
and bright illuminated water poured in as they left the kayak. It seemed
like five minutes, but couldn't have even been five seconds before they
turned the boat upright. All the water that had poured in slowly inching up
towards my nose suddenly slapped me in the face as the boat re-verted.
Quite a thrilling ride!!! Glad they remebered their precious cargo!
Harvey
