There are a few tapes from the National Film Board of Canada that show
aspects of kayak building and kayaking. At the Caribou Crossing Place, 2
parts, Building a Kayak, 2 parts. Each part is 30 minutes long. There is
also a 2 part Tuktu and the Big Kayak, which shows much of the same footage
from the "Building" videos. The Tuktu version I've seen was rather
hideously dubbed with an old man's voice playing the voice of the small
child (in English), relating the kayak building story through memory. The
other originals are not in English, but I saw a version of "Building" at
the Field Museum in Chicago that had English dubbing. They are all hugely
expensive but are found at some large libraries in the U.S. and no doubt
Canada as well.
You're right about them not being completely accurate in the historic
sense-the Netsilik caribou hunt was not even filmed in Netsilik territory,
for example, and there may be some innacurate details of kayak building
too, but I find them enjoyable if I suspend my attention to those kinds of
details. If you can do that, its about as close to living a day in the
traditional life of Inuit people as I've seen. They are very well made,
from a technical standpoint-high quality film, color, etc.
