Subject: baidarka Backrests, footbraces etc . . .

Like several other baidarka makers, I've lengthened the cockpit a little
(28" long in my case) to ease entry for my stiff old legs.
I've found that this has led to two problems - the "footbrace" deckbeam is
now out of reach when I lean on the rear coaming, and the "kneebrace" beam
is ahead of my kneecaps.
My attempt to solve this problem is to place a hanging backrest (hung from
webbing straps attached to the beam aft of the cockpit, and to the gun'ls
either side of the cockpit) about four inches for'ard of the back of the
coaming. I find, though, that this backrest is a little low for optimum
support and comfort. If raised, it gets in the way of entry.
It's not a very big deal - I very much enjoy paddling this boat, but the low
backrest arrangement is not ideal for stretches of an hour or more. I'd be
interested to hear if any better solution has been found. The essence of
the problem is to get a good backrest, kneebrace and footbrace in the
correct relative positions, to be able to enter the cockpit without getting
stuck, and still preserve the good looks and spirit of a traditional
baidarka.
