Subject: baidarka Comparison of types of wood

I'm building a Hooper Bay out of Ash instead of spruce (that used on the
model
on Mr. Zimmerly's site). I have good info on the properties of Ash, but
little on Spruce. I was curious as to how they compare weight and strength
wise. Can anyone pass along a little info? or even a good book title would
be much appreciated. Also, someone in an earlier discussion mention that if
you're going to build a boat out of Ash you need to oil it well. Why?
Thanks
in advance.

Vaya Con Dios.
