Assuming "canted" means flared, yes they are, and it is tricky to achieve
such flare-- I use an amidship former that holds the gunwales in proper
flare. Despite the curving and re-curving sheerline of East Greenland
kayaks, they're gunwales are apparently made from stright lengths of wood,
i.e. no curves sawn into them. I say this having built a replica of a 1933
East G.; I figured that there would be considerable shaping required to get
such a form, but as I spread and flared the gunwales and strapped & shimmed
the proper breadths into the kayak, it (as if by magic) assumed the exact
sheer-line I was aiming for! This is quite contrary to how many West
Greenland kayaks' gunwales are shaped (i.e. reverse-sheer, with rising ends
in many cases). Sometimes the more complex shapes are more simply achieved.
I hope this helps; keep us all posted on progress.
