Subject: baidarka "Savage Innocents" a Movie (late 1950's)

I have never seen this movie mentioned on this site. It stars Anthony
Quinn and introduces Peter O'Toole. I believe it takes place in
Greenland and is all about the trials and tribulations of a primitive
Inuit in the modern world. For you who are interested in authentic skin
boats there is a sequence that features two beauty East Greenland boats
(I think) and accompanying paddles. The boats have flat decks, skegs,
tri-pod stand setups just forward of the cockpits for tying harpoon
lines. The cockpits are flat with the skirts sewn into the boats. The
pateenaed (sp) skin is really beautiful with good shots of the sewn
seams. What impressed me was the performance in the water, obviously
they're not being paddled by the movie stars. If you are a builder I
think you will find the sequence quite inspiring............bob klemick
