Thanks for the link Kirk and thanks for the plans Lew. I have actually
hacked out a couple of paddles resembling the drawings based on a paddle Jim
Mitchell made me this summer. They work remarkably well in spite of my
craftsmanship. I don't have access to nice red cedar - but I'm having
decent luck with Home Depot redwood 2x4's and 2x6's. The new growth redwood
is not as strong as the cedar - but the paddles can be made slightly beefier
and still come out surprisingly light. I can't remember exact weights - but
30oz rings a bell.

The product appears to work flawlessly.
