Derek Hutchinson's book suggests strapping 20 or 30 pounds of ballast to the
floor behind the cockpit to steady things up. I've done this (using a BDH
cannister filled with sand or gravel) with my baidarka, and it feels fine.
When I go paddling with a load of picnic gear, I leave out the ballast and
it feels just the same. With no load, the boat floats a wee bit higher and
the light hull feels more "skittish" and worrying.
