I am told that rocks were the favorite ballast. No big loss if they went
overboard... or were tossed when replaced by the game.

There is a wonderful story in the book King Island Tales about a hunter who
kayaks out with his friend, who is lost. After four days of paddling, the
hunter lays down in his boat presumably to die. He is tossed about in the
storm, but stays perfectly stable. Eventually he awakens on a foreign
shore. He burns his kayak so he will stand a better chance of blending in
with the local population, and is eventually accepted. Quite a tale.
