Hi everyone,
I'm afraid I have more, possibly stupid, questions from the novice front.
As you may remember I'm building a North Alaskan Recovery Kayak from the
article in SeaKayaker's Oct 98 issue. I've gotten through the gunwale
problems, thank you, and at this point the deck is complete with frames and
stringers. It's even starting to look like a boat. Ribs have been soaking
for almost a week and I'm working on the keelson when I hit a brick wall.

I'm laying the keelson according to definition of "Depth to Shear" (top
of gunwale to top of keelson) as listed in the article but things just don't
look right. The measurement I used was 7-1/4" = tip of thumb to opposite
side of hand and set the keelson to that height at the Masik. When I sight
down the boat the keelson seems far too close to the gunwales and not at all
like the photographs in the article. When I applied the 7-1/4" from the
bottom of the gunwale it seems like a bit too much. Did I misunderstand the
depth of shear definition? How can I resolve this?

Following the rib mortise layout in the article, my last mortises are
about 12-3/4" for the bow and stern, I have a total of 14 mortises, 1-1/4"
long spaced 7-1/4" on center. The article said the last 12", bow and stern,
don't require mortises. Did I mortise extras or do these mortises receive
ribs?

Thanks in advance for you assistance
