When I bend my cockpit rims, I cut a 10' length of bending oak and boil it
for about three hours in a raingutter. Then I bend it quickly around a
form.

I've heard and seen references to Yellow Cedar darkening when subjected
to prolonged soaking in fresh water. Does anyone have a feeling for the
length of time cedar could soak before this discoloration starts to set in?
Also is it possible to soak 1/2" thick ash or some other bending stock
while incrementally forming it around a cockpit template, rather than
steaming. Is there any advantage to forming the cockpit this way as opposed
to steaming?

    Thanks in advance

Jed
