Roll could be done without paddle at all, -by hands. It depends on the
heap action to twist the boat upright and the timing of the stroke

I do usually extend my greenland padle during rolls, although I
believe one
should be able to do the roll without extending the paddle. John
Heath is
selling a video of Maligiaq Padilla's rolling demonstration, and it
shows a
whole variety of rolls, and is a great learning tool if you are
interested.
