Subject: baidarka scarfing gunwales

Hi folks,
I purchased white pine in 12 ft length to make my gunwales for Brinck
baidarka. Is scarfing acceptable for the gunwales (in terms of strength,
flexibility, and matching the other gunwale) and should the scarf be placed
at any particular place on the boat to be under less stress than another
location on the gunwale?
Also, I am making plenty of mistakes as I go here and ended up with a
slash-sawn board (the worst of the 3 possible choices) for straight and
matching gunwales. Are my gunwales doomed from the start? Thanks for any
suggestions.
