Some twist in the boat is not a problem. I have found that gunwales cut from
a single piece of wood can release forces in the wood causing strange twists
and curves. I solve this by cutting my material into 1/4" sections and
laminating them back together to form the 3/4" gunwales I use. This reduces
the twist but even then I get an occasional pair of gunwales that cause a
deck twist. Usually it isn't more than a 1/4".
You can go ahead if the twist isn't to bad and I don't think it will
adversely effect the boats performance. You may want to redo them since this
is your first boat and naturally you want it right. Lamination does reduce
the weight if you use good spruce. My 18' weights in about 29#. So it is a
solution you might want to try.
