baidarka Cunningham's ribs

I've just been looking at the Greenland kayak article from
Sea Kayaker and am wondering about that thinned-at-the-
bends rib design. None of the construction photos I've seen
on the Net appear to use it. (I'm only beginning to collect the
usual reference works; the Cunningham piece just happened
my way when it was published.) This leaves me wondering
why, as it seems incredibly easy to do with a template, a
router, and a ball-bearing trimming bit, if you can stand the
noise and lack of authenticity in the process. Is it an uncommon
Alaskan thing, or is there another reason it doesn't seem to
show up much?

Incidentally, I'm a little confused by Cunningham's description
of adding "two hand widths to the span between each pair of
mortises." Let's see, that's about 7 inches added to the length
of each successive rib, with my hands, or 42 inches by the sixth
rib. Where am I going wrong?

Thanks.
