I use pure tung oil (not necessarily raw -- I suspect it is not), but I add
a splash of Japan drier to speed the drying time. I blend the first coat
50:50 with paint thinner to help it penetrate the wood, then use straight
tung oil (with the Japan drier) for the following coats. Note that it takes
only about 30 - 60 ml of oil to cover one paddle.

I have never noticed any weight gain on a long trip. Though I have read that
tung oil is somewhat permeable to water, I suspect that may be to water in
the gaseous state rather than the liquid state. For that matter, I doubt
that even an unfinished paddle would absorb enough water to noticeably
increase the weight, unless you weighted it with a rock and submerged it for
a week or two.
