I used white oak, green rough cut from the mill. I bought a plank that
was 2 x 12 x 10' flat sawn for $16. After I sliced and diced away all of the
crap to get to flat grain, I ended up with enough material for 5 combings
with perfect grain. I let the wood dry enough to plane and sand the tapers,
then soaked it for a couple of days. I had heard about oversteaming, but
found it less common with green wood than with air or kiln dried stock. So I
steamed 1/4" thick stock for 1/2 hr then bent it around a form built using
Chris Cunningham's measurements in SeaKayaker. The bend was very easy and
there was no grain lift. After fine tuning the tapers with a sanding block I
ended up with a great looking and strong combing. That's my story and I'm
sticking to it!
