I didn't quite understand the last part. Applied tung oil will protect the
wood from water (in liquid state) to enter it. Why do you draw the
conclusion that unfinished wood will show the same behaviour?

What I meant is that I doubt that unfinished wood will absorb more than a
superficial amount of water in normal use, probably not enough to cause a
noticeable gain in weight. My first Greenland paddle was unfinished during
its first trip, and I never noticed a weight gain in two days of paddling on
salt water. Bear in mind that the paddle will not be continuously immersed,
and will dry at least partly when not being used. The only reason I applied
a finish to the paddle after the trip was because the sanded surface of the
paddle absorbed enough water to swell and become slightly rough, which
caused blisters on my hands. A finished surface remains smooth.
