Jamie
I have been using Flecto water-borne polyurethane for abut a year.
"Exterior" is less durable than "Interior" (!) and "Floor" finish is the
most durable.

Interior grade polyurethane has begun peeling fom a recovery, surf boat
built a year ago and paddled once or twice a week (though not surfed yet).

The boat has seen a fair amount of abrasion in launching and general use.
The peeling is limited to the raised surfaces of the small bumps caused by
the lashings and around the bow on the skin backed by wood. The skin that
has been able to flex between members when hit or abraded seems fine. I
think that the mechanism of damage has been impact producing compression
and/or shear between layers of finish.

The de-lamination between polyurethane layers seems to be at the surface of
the nylon skin. The layer within the nylon appears to be water proof. This
is difficult to confirm because the waterline is almost at the sheer at the
cockpit and water inside the kayak may come through this route.

I belive the problem is a result of not allowing enough cure time for the
varnish at the first coat. The boat was painted next to a door which was
left open and the bow was noticably cooler than the stern. This would
increase required cure time. Cure times between the coats were kept to the
minimum advised by the instructions on the can, and may have been shorter
because the builder was in a hurry to launch. The first coat, because it is
so thick, may require more cure time than advised by the instructions on the
can.

This is the only water-borne polyurethane treated boat that I have
encountered problems with. The lashing bumps and bow edges could be
flattened by grooving the stringers and keelson, or protected using wear
strips bedded to the exterior with sika or other fexible marine adhesive.

My first baidarka is nearing its skin application. I have read here that
some use water-borne polyurethane. I have treated a scrap of 10oz nylon
with 2 coats of this (Flecto brand) and it seems that another 5 coats would
be necessary to fill the fabric enough to produce a smooth surface. Should
I continue or switch to the more tried and true toxic treatments. And, what
specifically are these standards? I have tried to call Dyson. His line is
perpetually busy. Jamie

Whoa, Folks!
Enough kicking around architect sterotypes! Next people will be making fun
of Engineers teaching painting!
         --Harvey

Yea, I knew that one was coming...and deserved.

Actually I am not your typical engineer, and I often do not feel like much
of an engineer---I did not have much in common with the people I worked
when I used to work for someone else. One of the reasons I am self
employed.

The reality is my personality is not well suited to be an engineer, it is
just something that I can do well and make a living at, to finance the
things I really love to do (but are difficult to make a living at). Like
art, the outdoors (including kayaking), inventing gadgets and fun toys for
my kids, etc.
