Jamie,

I havent finished coating a boat yet, but I did a number of tests with oil
and water based polys on nylon couple months ago. The oil seems to fill
things up just a little better, which may mean one less coat or so. But its
also much less pleasant to be around, slightly less flexy, but probably
more abrasion resistant. I did find that working the poly into the weave on
the first couple coats with a putty knife or epoxy aplicator, as many
suggested, seemed to reduce the number of coats slightly (but not a huge
amount). Doing it that way with water base, I found the weave started to
fill on about the 4th coat, but as you found out at least 5-6, maybe even
7, are required to get a smooth surface. But thats just on the hull, theres
no reason you'd need more than 3-4 on the deck, IMO (and some people only
use 3-4 all around, I dont know if they have a secret or just dont mind a
slightly rough hull). Since the water base is so easy to work with and
dries quick, it still seems like a good way to go. I was using only
interior water base polys, as nobody sells exterior water base around here.
Thats what I plan to use on my two boats. I think the one parts are
perfectly adequate if you are careful and dont abuse your boat. If you are
abusive then the two-parts are superior I think, but much more troublesome
to be around.
