Forest,
Your problem tracking and your solution both fit the problem of being out
of trim. The bow is drafting deeper than the stern. Aside from changing
Wolfgang's shape you might find it easier (not easy, but easier) to move the
cockpit back, or (easier) the seating in the cockpit a few inches or
centimeters. A few cm here in the middle of the boat is a world of
difference out to the ends. If you are already seated with your back
against a knee, or rib, or station this may be even more difficult then
altering the shape. (An engineer looking over my shoulder here at work just
now suggested that you turn the boat around and paddle it backwards -but pay
no attention, he is an electrical engineer.)
When paddling with my wife she gets a 10 gallon collapsible jug full of
water in her end of the boat to keep the trim as I out weigh her a bit. I
would suggest 3 one gallon jugs full of water in the stern. Hmmm, sounds
familiar...
Russ-
Greetings
I've recently completed a baidarka ( Wolfgang's book ). I found this
process so enjoyable, another set of gunnels are now sitting on my saw
horses.
I have a question about hull shape. My boat is fairly hard to keep
straight, when empty. Once it starts to veer, even a little, it takes
quite a bit to straighten it back out. I may be imagining it but it
seems to be high in the stern.
When I put 3 one gal jugs of water, well back in the stern, I couldn't
believe the difference. I took it out in a rough sea and found it very
comfortable.
How normal is it to do this broaching thing when empty? I'm thinking I
may have put too much volume in the stern, by flattening the ribs too
much in this area. What do you guys think?
