Hi Forest!
David Zimmerly in Qajak (page 25) quotes Jochelson, Waldemar, History,
thnology and Anthropology of the Aleut. Washington Carnagie Instirttution of
Washington, Publication number 432:
"25 kilograms [55 pounds], distributed in the middle stern and prow to
prevent the boat from capsizing".
The baidarka was not really intended to be usualy used empty. Ballast has a
long history. You're in good company.
Robert

Greetings
I've recently completed a baidarka ( Wolfgang's book ). I found this
process so enjoyable, another set of gunnels are now sitting on my saw
horses.
I have a question about hull shape. My boat is fairly hard to keep
straight, when empty. Once it starts to veer, even a little, it takes
quite a bit to straighten it back out. I may be imagining it but it
seems to be high in the stern.
When I put 3 one gal jugs of water, well back in the stern, I couldn't
believe the difference. I took it out in a rough sea and found it very
comfortable.
How normal is it to do this broaching thing when empty? I'm thinking I
may have put too much volume in the stern, by flattening the ribs too
much in this area. What do you guys think?
Forrest Rand
