Thanks Harvey, I knew you would come through. ;-) I was actually going to
ask if anyone had drilled their rib mortises on the top of their gunnels
but then I figured no, there's just no way anyone could do something
so...well, Wayneish. ;-)
I had to remeasure for my deck beams because my original plan of 8 inches
apart (thats about 2 pints for you Canadians ;-) placed beams smack dab in
the middle of my darts. I didnt like that idea, and seven inches ended up
with similar problems, so I decided on 9 inches. I drilled marker holes
(again!) and was feeling really proud of myself, and decided to call it a
day. Then I thought no, lets get those mortises started. So I drilled one
on each gunnel and chiselled em out, then had dinner. When I went back I
saw that I had done one of them on the wrong side of the gunnel. Just one
though. Its a good thing I didnt do them all before dinner, or I'd be a
hurtin unit. If these were through-mortises it wouldnt have been a problem,
and after hearing your story I feel a lot better. I dont know if this
qualifies as *THE* dumbest thing I've ever done but it's certainly in the
top 5,000.
So I'm either going to have one, 1/2 through-mortised beam on my boat, or
I'm going to plug the hole and do it again the right way. I havent decided
yet but I'm too busy working on the other mortises (almost done!) to worry
about it for now. I'm already working on yet another misadventure, so stay
tuned.
