Boats with lots of foot height can use those felt-soled dive boots.
Northwest Outdoor Center (NWOC) believes in them, or in the neoprene-soled
boots with the semi-rigid soles. The ones I have are from NRS, and have
soft flexible neoprene soles. That's the only one I can wear in my baidarka,
because of the height of the sole. Also, I like to be able to move things
inside with my toes. Wool sox almost work, but the barnacles and basalt
around our beaches are a bit sharp. I've been curious about those wool
slippers, essentially wool sox with leather soles, that we had when I was a
kid. Anybody tried them?

The heel rest that I have been using for years in my boats is getting
better. Am now using a cut-off deck beam, so that it is angled to fit the
position of my feet. It is very comfortable now, and for the most part it
serves the purpose of keeping my knees lodged into the knee rests. Between
that and the use of Thermarest air pillow on the seat, have solved the
legs-going-to-sleep problem.

I go barefoot when it's warm enough and wear neoprene
booties I get at dive shops. For some reason, kayak
booties always have too much heel on them. But that
may have changed. Diver gear generally seems to be
warmer because it's made for total immersion. Also
booties are generally made to be worn with flippers so
they don't have outrageous heels.
