A word of warning, for what it's worth. We practice kayak rescue scenarios
up at Thetis Island. One that we have practiced involves a kayaker wearing
sandals (Teva) where the nylon straps have become hooked over the foot pegs
in the boat during a capsize. We had an actual one where the gentleman's
ankle was severely sprained by same, trapping his foot into the hull so
tightly that he had to be pushed into shore while holding the bow of a
rescue boat. Whereupon someone sat on his hull and sprung it till it broke
in order to free his badly injured ankle. I will no longer allow sandals of
any kind on trips that I lead. If that is the only footwear that the
kayaker brought, I will ask them to take them off once in the boat and put
them back on once they land.

Summer: rubber sandals with foam soles (kind of strap on the heel, look very
german) cheap kind. This is to get in and out of the water on rocky - spiny
areas, and to push hard on the footrests when needed, also protects my own
heels.

Winter (Mediterranean) 3mm neoprene socks + same sandals.
The combination provides for tougher soles than booties at a less expensive
cost, and can be worn in hot or colder climates.
Make sure you can your sandals under your deck without getting stuck when
exiting. They are quite difficult to unlace when capsized in apnea.

closed cell foam on the bottom and on the footrests is grand for bare.footed
trips, avoiding heel suffering.
