Speaking of speculation, has anyone read Farley
Mowat's new book _The Farfarers_ ?
His main thesis is that British walrus ivory hunters
predated Vikings in Greenland and North America by
several hundred years. According to Mowat, they hunted
in what is now Canada at the time of the Thule culture
which predates the later Inuit. He also made the point
that these European contacts provided the indigenous
North American culture with iron tools long before the
European whalers arrived.
If any of this is true, Europeans and North Americans
would have been exchanging goods and technology,
including boat building and paddle making technology
for much longer than was previously thought.
