Jean Neyret, in his astounding work "Pirogues Oceaniennes" (2 volumes;
undated, but ca.1976: Association Des Amis Des Musees De La Marine, Paris)
shows several examples of blunt ended Polynesian paddles (pages 24 [Makemo],
33 [Easter Is.], 63 [Rarotonga]-- all in vol.2) There are also an amazing
variety of shapes and styles of paddle shapes from this region and
throughout the Pacific. (It also depicts the double bladed paddles as found
in the Phillipines and in Guyana. . . not the best drawings, but original
sources are referenced.) There are also crank-shaft and spoon-blade paddles
to be found in this book.
This book is well worth acquiring for those interested in canoes of the
oceans. It is very thorough, though is especially weak in Arctic Regions!
The volumes total some 500 pages and are packed with drawings and references
(fortunately!). It is in French, but curiously: The illustrations are not.

P.S. Was a walking in the woods today. . . what does leaf-shape mean? We
have Cottonwood, Maple, and Oak out here. . .
