How is winter on Hokkaido? We have had it rough here in Unalaska for the past
few months. The photo that you mentioned in your posting was discussed a while
back on this message list, you may find some more info on it by looking back at
the archives. In the photo (Baidarka, p79) there are actually three of the
three-hatch boats being paddled from the rear cockpit. The third and fourth
boats from the left and the fifth from the right. Forgive me for not
remembering what you told me about left and right in Japanese! It looks like
the group in this picture were simply posing for the camera, as it appears that
not many of them are in paddling-type clothing. One explanation for the
position of the paddlers is that the three hatch boats had loads in the middle
hatches. Perhaps due to the arrangement of the cargo the balance was better in
the front-seat, rearward facing position for the single paddler instead of from
the rear cockpit. Although this looks like a nice day, perhaps those
"Kodiak-style" kayaks didn't handle very well in the Aleutians! More than
likely these guys were just hamming it up for the camera.
