Dear Peter, and all,
I've forgotten what the artificial 'sinew' I had the bad-luck with was made
of; it was purchased at Tandy Leather Co. From what I've been told (and
have since seen) about the wet/dry & hot/cold cycles of nylon and polyester
(with regards to kayak skins, at least), it would make sense that the sinew
that failed me was of nylon. All my other boats are lashed with a tarred
nylon seining twine (of very small diameter: 1/16")-- this stuff holds up
extremely well; 30 kayaks tied with it so far. The tarred and twisted
variety is superb, and it stays taut. My first kayak's lashings were of
garden variety Jute twine, oiled with linseed. They too are still holding
up just fine. Anyone tried Hemp? I almost picked up a roll the other day;
Its supposed to be very rot-resistant, having been prized for ships' lines &
rigging, etc.
    Harvey
