Wayne,
It occurred to me there is another reason so seal the wood. All wood,
especially light open grain soft woods like hemlock and cedar will also
absorb a lot of water, adding weight to the boat. this probably is not a
big deal for short term recreational type use, but could add a lot of
weight on extended trips. Soaked wood is also significantly weaker and
less stiff, though I do know if it would be enough to cause a failure but I
would not want to find out in rough seas with a loaded kayak!

I can see cedar on the west coast (where some were also coated), but wasnt
(isnt) spruce the dominant driftwood elsewhere? Which ones were made of
bone? I'm aware of kostchotki (sp) in joints, but not entire boats made of
bone. I'd like to make a bone kayak but that would be a lot of deer-bone
scarfs. ;-)
At any rate I should slap sumthin on my hemlock because its in a part that
is in contact with the skin, and might remain damp longer.
