Jeff makes a good point, if you wanted it easy why not just mount a motor
on your yak and be done with the paddles.
Or better yet, if it is human power you want, I once saw a clever
contraption on Green Lake in Seattle, it was a sleek all wood kayak type
hull with the pilot on his back with foot petals and a crank driving a
shaft and propeller. Looked fun and fast (and efficient)!

Paul,
Ya' know what they say about opinions, don't you?......I won't repeat it
here,
but I do have to have to say that you have to do what feels right for you.
 My
opinion is this: There is absolutely no WRONG way to paddle, just as there
is
no way to paddle perfectly. Efficiency is good. Enjoyment is far, far
better.
Purists have every right to try and be pure, but let's face it, the very
name of
this mailing list/discussion group "baidarka" is ridiculously unpure,
impure,
not pure, etc. There is no place for elitism in the world of "traditional
kayaking".
