.. In this country generally the first thing that you learn is a wet-exit and
most sea kayakers begin a "rescue" by bailing out. As a contrast, the popular
attitude of the Greenlanders is that exiting a kayak in freezing water is
simply not an option. Rather than a wet-exit, new paddlers are taught to
become comfortable while capsized. Wet-exits and PFDs are simply not part of
the Greenlandic paddling culture. When several women capsized during the
National Championships and could not roll, they sculled to the surface to
breathe and waited for the rescue boats. ...

.. a couple of us have started experimenting with a more "stay in the boat"
approach to rescues. What we've been practicing, and trying to encourage
others to practice (with less success), is swimming to the surface while
still in the boat long enough to get a breath, then returning to continue the
pound-and-wave cycle. ...

During my early (autodidactic) rolling efforts I found repeated
re-submersions somewhat disconcerting after missed rolls. Not wanting to wet
exit either, I began to use a gallon milk jug to gain enough buoyancy at the
surface to catch my breath and compose myself before reinverting for the next
attempt. In fact, between my PFD and the paddle float held just "over" my
head (while lying on the surface of the water), or even behind my neck, I had
enough buoyancy to relax for extended periods. This practice drastically
reduced my need for time consuming and annoying / tiring wet exits.
