As far as scantlings go a lot will depend on the boat that you're going to
build and the wood(s) you use... on my 13' x 28" boat for the gunnels I used
3"x3/4" vg fir, the keel is 1 1/4"x3/4" vg fir, the stringers are 3/4"
square red cedar, the ribs are 1"x1/4" white oak, the bow and stern are a
mix of birch plywood and mahogany that I scrounged at the beach. It is a
stiff boat and a bit heavy for it's size... I spaced the ribs at 6"
intervals except in the area of the cockpit where they are 4"... in the
future I would keep the rib spacing at 6" throughout and make the ribs about
1/32 thinner or so... they are plenty strong as is... for the record I'm
6'2" and about 265 lbs.
check out "the aleutian kayak" by Wolfgang Brinck and "umiak" by Skip
Snaith they are both constant companions to me while I think about and build
boats. "how to make skin and frame boats" by Robert Morris should be out in
a little while (amazon says the end of nov.) I talked with Robert at his
shop in Vancouver B.C. and am looking forward to getting his book.
