Subject: baidarka In favor of longer kayaks.

I still toy with building a long, narrow Baidarka despite the protests
from so many of you. Here's why. I paddle a double folding now and
that type is all I have ever had. Loaded, it is a job to paddle day
after day. True, a 15 - 17 footer is more useful than 23---except, the
23 is more stable, carries a large load lower, has much less resistance
to the water at 21" beam than a 24" and especially than my 34". For
what you use your boats for, day to week tripping, my folding double
would be too large for you. But for the long hauls I travel alone,
can't leave my yak to resupply in some store since it would be stolen,
and, it just takes a large boat. Compared to your boats, mine is
clumsy, slow, askward, heavy, and tiring. Compared to yours mine will
cross the Atlantic safely, and has more than once. An inbetween
approach is the narrow long one. It compromises both yours and mine,
but it meets the needs of both to some degree. After paddling large
doubles like mine all my life, the handling of such a boat would have to
be a great improvement.
HMMM. Just had a thought (now that's novel). Maybe my best solution is
to keep my big folder for long trips, at which it excels, and build a
17' for the short stuff.
